Dear CAG breeders,

I am new into the breeding of African Grey parrots and facing a few problems.  I have three pairs of greys.  All DNA sexed and bonded.  Two pairs produced four eggs each and incubated the full term but were infertile!  One pair produced one chick out of four eggs but without the initial white fluff and the chick appeared naked.  After two months even, except for the wing feathers, the chick has not developed body feathers except that of a few here and there.

Could you please advise me, what could be the problem and what measures should be taken to avoid this in future i.e. the problem of not having full feathers and the problem of infertile eggs.

Regards

Taz

I think ali may have more of an idea of this than some of the other members on here. We don't have many breeders on the forum Sad

If it's their first clutch, as in agewise, there's not much to be worried about in my opinion, however, if the birds have been laying eggs prior to coming to you then I guess you have to find a proper breeding forum or a vet to search for an answer, as I myself am not a breeder (yet).
As for the chick with no feathers, they all hatched like this but within a couple of days fluffy whitish feathers appeared on their body and around 2 months of age they are covered with pin feathers all around the body. In the absence of a photo I can only guess that your baby is doing fine but I'm not sure since I haven't seen it.
It is advised to search for a breeders' forum (there may be some on the net).

Walaikum Assalam wa rahmat ullah-e-wa barakatoho
No, I live in Pakistan and my name is Nusrat Ali. You are indeed blessed to live in Madina, I recently visited there while on Hajj. Very freindly people who are eager to help. I've got an African Grey Pair (which my uncle says are both males!!!!), and 2 tamed and talking greys. One is a female by the name of Captain and the other's name is Jojo who comes from a friend who said it's a male but again my uncle says it's a she. I take my uncle's words as he's a breeder and knows a lot about them.
What are the objectives for you to breed greys in Madina? Is it because there's a vast demand of tamed greys in the Middle East or do you intend to export them to Europe or America? You need to be mindful of the paperwork and other requirements in that case. And have you ringed your first chick yet?
Where in India you belong to?

Dear Ali, greetings from Madina AlMunawara!

this is great to know you.  Well, by profession I am an hotel executive, right in front of Prophet (SAW) mosque and spend spare time after office hours with greys and started breeding them as hobby since last two years after a great search and patience.   Though the local demand, as you said, is huge but have never thought of exporting birds.  May be, when I settle down in India in another two/three years' time.  Might think of doing something like that.  My email is tas6_1999@yahoo.com.

Regards,
Taz

Which hotel, Oberoi? I stayed at Movenpick. You didn't tell me your state of origin in India and good luck with your future plans.
