I have read and seen lots of things about giving treats when training, but am not sure what people give as a treat.  What is recommended as a treat when training?

A bit of experimentation will help.  Wuzzie cannot resist cheese (a piece the size of a cheerio) or a tiny piece of a "corn chip", or a small piece of grilled chicken.  Everything else is optional: one hour she likes cheerios, the next she throws them back at my face.  Same with mango, grapes, carrots, broccoli,  yams and peanuts (shelled, unsalted).  What does she want at the moment?  Huh  I don't know!  I never did get her to accept a commercial parrot "treat" from the pet store, so I would try some "real" food first.

And, like people, these birds do have preferences: I do not like pickles, any form of yogurt or sour kraut (and I am half-German by descent).  But if you do: more power to you!  Wink

Mine go after sunflower seeds, and peanuts plus baby coconuts that birds chew away from the tree outside my home

Thanks for all the answers, looks like I shall have to experiment.  I would prefer to do the tickle treats, which are less fattening but highly enjoyable.  But I know that food is the way to a grey's heart at times...  Grin

Always remember: the road to a grey's heart goes through the stomach, or was it about men? I'm confused here.

none of my birds, really go for any commercial treats! They love cheerios, carrots, raspberries, snowpeas, peanuts etc. What they go for the most, is my praise, cuddles and words of encouragement. My reward for positive behavior, is my "excitement for their accomplishment!" I have to admit, I have never used treats or food for accomplishment.(although I can see how that might work!)I think my lack of expertise, I tended to raise them like a toddler.I never even thought of food, since I didn't know! (my life probably would have been easier!)   Nancy M

a great way to reinforce good behavior is positive, exciting praise. they love that.
as far as treats, only you will know what his/her favorite treat is.
they do really love crunchy stuff though, at least mine does. like a potatoe chip, cereal, or hard noodles.

I always give praise in what ever Darwin does...  I have found he loves Almond, so I break some up and offer that as a treat... but the best treat of all if getting a while one.  Though at the moment pomegranate is a firm favourite...
