Charlie (10 months old) is terrified of toys. Sometimes as long as they are smaller than him he is fine. I bought him a small pyramid that is a forraging toy for during the days that I'm not home, and its small, like half his size, and he SCREAMS at it!!! I tried to give him a cup carrier like from McDonald's for him to chew, my old cockatoo loved them, and they make a fantastic mess of them. I tried acclimating him to them by starting it out just in the room for a day or so, and then moving it closer to the cage day by day, and when it gets too close he screams and if he gets the chance, flies away from it. Its like i'm trying to kill him. His little heart gets so fast and his little eyes get really big and buggy. I feel terrible that he can't enjoy his toys, and I am limited to wooden toys, and he LOVES his wooden perches, I'm going to have to buy them in bulk.  |

He's still too little a bird so don't 'push' the toy thing too much because then he may be afraid of them for life. For a starter don't put any toy in his cage that he may be afraid of. Put it at a distance where he can actually go and touch it and leave it there as long as you can afford. Show him that you love that toy by imitating to play with it. Put treats such as peanuts (de-shelled) or sunflower seeds around that toy at a safe distance for your bird initially just to let him come to terms with the toy to get to the treat.

even now jasper at 3 and a half is terrified of new toys,even objects  when his spare cage has been put away for winter he forgets what it looked like and is nervous of going in it to start with |

I remembered reading somewhere before getting Darwin, that you should show them a new thing every day. I have been doing that, showing him strange things sometimes... today's was a large blue plastic pig money box. He was nervous of it, and I just left it there and eventually he went over for a taste and even sat on it.  Not sure I have enough things to show him something new every single day... but I will give it a go, especially if it gets him used to new objects and not be as scared. He has never been scared of one of his toys thus far though, he ignores most after a while, and goes back to the lolly sticks and wooden clothes pegs he loves. hugs Janie xxx |

He just is so silly when it comes to new things. He was afraid of my clothing basket, and t-shirts a little. We have been practicing toweling for when we go to the vet, and he's ok with that.... but T-shirts, forget it! I have to cover his cage just so I don't scare him when I do the laundry.

My cockatiel loves to watch us fold the laundry: he will sit on the laundry basket and sing and sing. On the other hand, most "different" things, like toys, or a different perch, terrify him. I wish I had started to introduce him to something new everyday when he was young, now it's a bit late, and he likes things to be "the same." |

take it slow, and make it fun...they love to have things they're not allowed, so after they get used to it being around ( very important) make it fun by 'hey, give me that back' sort of thing... |

indroduce your baby, to the world of shredding! Do your bills... let baby sit along side of you, give yp part of bill you don't need, to be shredded. Let baby shred, while you do your paperwork! Hang together! Baby will wait for more! Toys don't always need to be toys! Toys can be something to shread, something to chew, such as leather shoe laces! I buy them all the time, just for Sophie! Sophie, loves to steal Ollie's duck!She know's he will go to battle for a "tug of war!" He will pull gently, to give her a chance! She always thinks she has won! (ollie lets her!) She is quite lost without Ollie right now. I can't pick him up until Monday. She is not happy!(nor am I!!!!!) Nancy M
