Hi all...

Okay so we have booked Darwin in for his first visit to the vets...  Thursday afternoon (tomorrow as this is written)... please can you advise me on...

What do I put in his travel cage, for approx, an hours journey each way?  (food, water etc)

Is there anything in particular I should ask the vet about?

We enquired about chipping over the phone, but was told that the vet couldn't say without examining Darwin as they wouldn't do it if he was not big enough yet, with him being a young bird.  So was pleased they had told us that, sounds like they know what they are doing about chipping...

Thanks in advance for any input... am a bit worried about his first visit... being a worry wart and all...   Undecided

Personally, I would put food in the crate for the trip and then after his vet visit, when he is back in the travel crate and in the car, I would offer him water that I brought from home. This will keep water from spilling in the crate and making a mess. Having water with you is good in case you get delayed.....but then having dogs, you would know this!

Yes we always have a bottle of water with us on our trips out... along with a poop bags, kitchen towel, plastic bags and goodness know what else... lol

The vet rang up today and said that she wouldn't consider chipping with Darwin being so young, and she didn't want us to waste our time if that was what we were coming up for.   At least it seems she has Darwin's best interest at heart...  we have postponed our trip now until a week on Saturday...  not that Darwin will get chipped that day either, but we still want to get him a health check...

Sounds like a responsible vet to me, let's hope these are not some marketing gimmicks to hook new customers.

Janie.... as I have been out of the loop for years, does "chipping" mean, you can track your bird?(makes sense to me), If that is the case.... good thinking! Does this visit, include, "well child visit?" I remember the day I got Sophie, within two days, she had a "well bird visit!" (but she was two years old) Different!How are things going?   Nancy M

Micro chipping involves placing a small electronic chip under the skin...  which can be read by a special wand type machine.  These chips have a unique number that is registered to you, so any animal that is chipped can be traced back to the owner.  All our dogs have been chipped, and thank goodness we have never had to use the service....  but it is there if we do need it.   Grin   I have never had a bird chipped, so will discuss it with the vets.

We have asked for a health check, not knowing what things need to be looked at with a bird - so if you can tink of anything we should ask about then I would be grateful for the help.

as an add on to the last reply nancy, no you cannot track a chip location by signal like a mobile company can a phone unfortunately. if that was the case id be first in the queue with both mine.

Alicat....wouldn't it be GREAT, if we COULD micro chip our birds, that if they were fully flighted, and got away, we could find them?  I asked my groomer, why he is so against letting birds be fully-flighted! He explained, he gets at least 10 calls a week for lost birds, or "found", lost birds! He told me the amount of calls, are decreasing, because more people are trimming due to lost birds. A homing device, would eliminate need to trim.   Nancy M
