They mean that he needs his claws/nails trimming.

There's many ways to do this. A vet is the best bet to start with.

I had Macey's nails trimmed at the vets for the first time, then I tried it myself after that but it was a bit traumatic. Since then, I have bought a perch which has a rough feel to it (sandy perch I think) and she has never had to have a nails clipped since. The perch keeps them nice and trim.

I have a feeling that your photograph may be a little deceptive in making billy's claws look longer than they really are.  As chip suggested, the easiest thing to do is ask a vet to take a look at them then provide several perches with different surface textures.  Your bird will keep his own beak and nails trimmed if given the tools to do so  Smiley

Greys Nails should form a perfect quarter circle...  all I do with Darwin is file off the very tips... to stop them hurting when he lands on me...  don't resemble someone who has gone to war with a cat so much these days...   Cheesy

wen billy first stepped up on my arm he used 2 leave some nasty scratches
but i dont get them now since a put a sandy-like pearch in for him
its his fave place 2 stand now in his cage.
hes coming on a treat now and lets me do almost anything with him.

Stuart just collected him just this minute...  hope we aren't going to start fighting for his attention...   Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Roll Eyes Grin

I am so happy that Billy is so happy with you and you with him...
